Kelly was an independent travel agent in 1984 and 1985 before returning to college and earning her BA in English and journalism. She graduated from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1995. She taught school for 25 years and retired in May 2020.

Kelly now works as an independent travel consultant specializing in worldwide family travel.  Kelly and her husband live in Archer City, Texas, and they have three adult married children and 5 grandchildren.
